Gelfand, author of pioneering works from various fields of mathematics and geometry, was a professor at Rutgers University. Before leaving the U.S. in 989 of lectures at the University of Moscow.
He was awarded many international prizes and awards, including the Wolf Prize and Kyoto Prize. "Mathematics for me is a universal language of science and an example of how people from different cultures and backgrounds can communicate with each other and work together - once wrote in a letter to the American Mathematical Society in 2005, accepting an award for lifetime achievement.
